A note from a modern-day Romeo:Our advanced theatre class set out this semester to do something different with Shakespeare, so you’ll notice that for starters, I--Romeo--am a girl. We wanted to see what happened to Shakespeare’s classic story when we set it in today’s society with a pairing that reflects some of the relationship struggles we face in our hallways everyday. Hopefully you’ll see something you relate to, maybe something you recognize. While this play was written hundreds of years ago, the issues plaguing the young people in this story still haunt us today. We hope you’ll see how these struggles affect us, and can even end up defining us if we don’t stand together and find a way to do something about the hate in our world that continues to kill the things we love. We owe each other acceptance, that’s what my tragic end ultimately is meant to teach us all…until society manages to master that lesson, I guess my story continues to be retold over and over again. Here is another reiteration for you…I hope it finds you well and leaves you hopeful for a better future; maybe one where Romeo and Juliet actually get to see the sunrise together. Until then-
